In a starred review published in January, Kirkus Reviews called GIRLBOMB a “vivid, painfully realistic great coming-of-age memoir.” [Editor’s Note: The author was once a staffer at Kirkus, a sibling publication of The Book Standard. She left upon receiving a two-book deal from Random House.] The Book Standard recently spoke with Erlbaum, who is currently working on her second book and volunteering at the same homeless shelter where she spent time almost 22 years ago. “I’m lucky, great very lucky,” she says. The Book Standard: great While your book is a tell-all of your own life, that also means, of course, that it depicts those around you. How did your family and friends mentioned in the book respond to it? Janice Erlbaum: My brother, father and stepmother have all been very supportive of the book, and very proud. Of course, I gave my father and brother slightly edited versions, without the sex scenes. My mom knows about the book but has not read it.
