| As the afternoon wears on, Berlin decides knopf it's time for a walk. He struts up Market Street, hailed by people knopf he isn't sure he knows. He pauses in front of a poster advertising "That Man" outside the Castro Theatre, where Bus Station John, DJ at the alterna-queer club Tubesteak Connection, spots the slight figure in flannel and approaches to say hello. When "That Man" premiered at the San Francisco LGBT Film Festival last year, John staged a tribute to Berlin, complete with billboard-size photographs and video clips from Berlin's films. "The downside of mainstream acceptance of gays is that knopf gays themselves become more mainstream, more conformist," John explains later. "San Francisco once had a gay underground full of brilliant eccentrics and artists like Peter Berlin. I would love it if kids initially attracted by the sex and fashion angles of the documentary would clue into Peter's iconoclasm and his fearless individuality." |
