Themes: I noted four main themes in this film (there may be others that I missed) and three seem to me to be largely uncontroversial. One obvious theme is Manuela’s recovery from her tragic loss. She is able to recapture meaning in her life by redirecting her maternal instincts to the many needy people she encounters in Barcelona – Rosa, Agrado, Huma, Nina, and, briefly, Lola.
