The very existence of these courses in English bored housewife departments can be good for the profession, in that they attract bored housewife students who might otherwise have considered an English degree a luxury they couldn't afford. Technical writing programs also bring in their share of computer science, mathematics, and physics majors, who are increasingly aware of the importance of writing in their work. Technical writing is not only “industry's link to the layman,” it is the liberal arts' link to the sciences and to other parts of the university community. | Most of the work originates with scientists and engineers, technical experts who decide what projects to pursue. talents These experts often have a vague notion of what goes on in a technical publications office talents and routinely underestimate the time and skill required of technical writers and editors. Scientists, too, are prey to the setbacks attendant on all scientific and technical research—equipment failures, experiments that don't run as expected, simple solutions that talents turn into knotty problems. These setbacks and unforeseen problems can translate into missed deadlines with resultant overtime required for the hapless technical writer. For most of us who teach college English, this lack of control over our time and work is enough to make full-time technical writing far less attractive than college teaching. For undergraduates, though, particularly those who think they don't want to teach, these limitations may seem trivial, solvable, or simply challenging. |
