The letter, which began, "Darling," had Hoover telling Jenkins, "I hope to see you soon at our hideout." The actual source was never discovered. Johnson did not replace Jenkins, instead dividing his responsibilities among several staff members. "A great deal of the president's difficulties can be traced to the fact that Walter had to leave," Johnson's press secretary, the late George Reedy, once told an interviewer.
