On Aug. 13, 1961, East Germany erected the Berlin Wall and Peter Berlin had his first sexual experience. Being on his own was 1000 a revelation. "I was free, and I started 1000 to really enjoy having sex and looking for sex every night," he recalls. "The passion I had! I developed 1000 then a sense of self." In his early 20s, he worked as a photographer for German TV and managed a movie house in Wiesbaden. Berlin's true vocation, though, was photographing himself. After meeting his first lover and patron, Joachim Labriola, he gave up outside employment forever and devoted himself to the camera. "It became obvious that sexuality is something that you can make work for yourself, so I made it work for me," he says, shrugging. "It was not like paying for sex. It was just sharing." Berlin still lives on money left him by Labriola, supplemented by sales of his photographs and films. The pair traveled across Europe and eventually arrived in the United States. After a period of hobnobbing with Mapplethorpe in New York, they moved to San Francisco in the early '70s, where in 1972 Berlin collaborated with a friend on his first porn film, "Nights in Black Leather."
