"We use comedy because it is a way to speak to youngsters," explains Carina, a teenager from Guatemala City, Guatemala. "When we speak directly about the topic, they get bored. It is better to talk about it with laughter so latina that they understand what we are telling them." Guatemala is one of the Central American countries where it is most urgent that latina young people learn how to keep themselves safe from HIV. It is estimated that 67,000 Guatemalan children and adults are infected with HIV, and more than 30,000 children have latina been orphaned by the disease. As well as taking part in the performances on the streets, at schools and at juvenile detention centres, Carina holds workshops at her home, talking to fellow teenagers about how HIV is transmitted and how they can protect themselves.
