I am alarmed by her statement that sex ed. encourages children to experiment with sex: I strongly disagree. I believe that sex ed that is handled appropriately, and that is age-appropriate, will really teach mother daughter chit chat kids what to expect from a developmental point of view; it will also empower mother daughter chit chat them to make healthier, informed and positive choices. At the very least, sex ed will dispel the taboo (and the silenece) about sex and all things related, and will teach kids that it is ok to talk about sex, to ask questions; to say 'no'. In countries where sex is not a taboo subject, teens abstain or use protection far more frequently than in countries where sex ed is not taught (or taught poorly) and where sex is a taboo topic. |
