| As my doctor said, it was only horror / sci fi / fantasy after men started getting irritable bowel syndrome (or admitting to horror / sci fi / fantasy it, I should say), that any research and treatment came about. The book was indeed "slight" (as Kaysen described it in an interview), but to add much more to it would be to belabor the point. Your vagina has rebeled, your vagina has died, it's horrible - we get it. The terse prose was perfect for the subject matter, and the imagery was lovely. It was also a very quick horror / sci fi / fantasy read - a nice change from long, depressing literary novels. I disagree with the reviewer who said that getting into the "old age" portion was a bad thing - it's part and parcel to how the author was feeling - her vagina hurt, she's getting old, she's no longer sexually attractive/active... |
