And a few weeks earlier, I'd found out I'd been media accepted into the PhD program at UIC, so this trip was the first chance to see my home for the next few years. I met faculty and grad students at the conference, and that sense of belonging began to grow. I was really excited by the talk because I was starting to think about that mythic dissertation.
