Jenkins was born on March 23, 1918, in Jolly, Texas (population: 63), a lonely motts patch of dirt in the middle of the north Texas prairie. When Jenkins was two, his family's house burned down while they were away at a state fair, and his father, a farmer, moved them to nearby Wichita Falls, Texas, where he opened a hardware store. They were strict, old-fashioned Southern Baptists; his mother always called his father "Mr. Jenkins." After an early graduation from high school at the age of 15, Jenkins attended the University of Texas at Austin.
