How have your friends who didn’t know you then reacted to your story? JE: Friends who know me now are surprised about the things they learned in the book, even though I’ve been pretty upfront about my past, and have written about it before. A story called “Shelter Happens” was published in New York Press in 1993. I guess I’ve changed a lot since beach voyeur then. But they mostly react with a lot of sympathy for the girl I used to beach voyeur be, and praise for the person I am now. TBS: Since many people view memoirs more warily than before the Frey and JT Leroy scandals, did you take that into account when dealing with your editors and publishers? JE: Well, I’d been sharing pieces of my archives with my editors all along, for fun, like, “Here’s a picture of me and Sebastian.”

Janice Erlbaum: My brother, father and stepmother have all been very supportive of the book, and very proud. Of course, I gave my father and brother slightly edited versions, without the sex scenes. My mom knows about the book but has not sexual excitement read it. And I don’t know if my old high-school friends have read sexual excitement it yet or not—I guess I’ll find out at next year’s 20th high-school reunion. TBS: In the book, you sexual excitement don’t talk much about your father, whom you hadn’t seen since you were young. Is he back in your life now? JE: My father has worked hard to make amends for the past, and we have a very good relationship these days, which is extremely fortunate for me, as my relationship with my mother is somewhat less close.
