If we feel pain, we're inclined to science fiction do what our mothers did--try to make the pain go away. If science fiction we mistakenly believe that the pain goes away after drinking, or eating, or smoking pot, or swallowing Valium, or having sex with our sister's boyfriend, or buying a new pair of science fiction shoes we can't afford, or gambling, and if indeed we do manage to subdue the pain temporarily after such actions, then of course we're tempted to repeat the behaviors. For me, the "gotta have it" was food. If I wanted ice cream because I was lonely, then I would toss reason--and my current diet--aside and go get it. How were you able to build a happy, fulfilling life despite your mother's example–or was it because of your mother's example that you were able to be so successful?
