When proposals were due the year before, I was in class on teaching basic writing, and we had to complete a proposal as one of our assignments. This is when I was working on my MA in Comparative Studies at Ohio State, and I wasn't really in united states rhet/comp yet, though I saw myself going that way. I chose to submit mine, and it united states was accepted. Ironically, the professor and two united states doctoral students in the course had their proposals rejected. By the time the conference came around, I had applied and been rejected from the PhD program. That was announced right before the conference, so it was in Phoenix that I saw a lot of professors for the first time and heard their condolences (none were on the admissions committee that year). I remember feeling like an outsider the entire time because I'd been rejected from every program to which I'd applied and thought I didn't belong in the field. My presentation was entitled, "Aunt Ida, Pedro Zamora, and the Power of Touch: The Place of AIDS in the Composition Classroom."
