| (I don't keep up the membership now that I'm surrounded by people who are brighter than I am by far, but it helped me feel competitive.) I still feel socially awkward, especially at parties. If people horror / sci fi / fantasy are drinking, I become extremely uncomfortable and make excuses to leave early. My best friends aren't drinkers. How different was it to grow up in the 1950's and 1960's with a mother who horror / sci fi / fantasy was an alcoholic, as opposed to growing up with an alcoholic mother today? In some ways, it's much easier today if a horror / sci fi / fantasy girl has an alcoholic mother than it was for me in the 50's and 60's. The talk shows and tabloids have at least gotten the idea of the dysfunctional family out into the open. The shame factor is somewhat diminished. However, life is much harder in other ways now, and I worry about girls who have weak bonds with their mothers. As a college teacher, I'm seeing a lot of drinking among my female students, and I can't help wondering if we won't be reaping some bitter harvests down the road, once these young women have children of their own. |
