On Aug. 13, 1961, East Germany erected the Berlin Wall and Peter Berlin had horror his first sexual experience. Being on his own was a revelation. "I was free, and I started to really enjoy having sex and looking for sex every horror night," he recalls. "The passion I had! I developed then a sense of self." In his early 20s, he worked as a photographer for German TV and managed a movie house in Wiesbaden. Berlin's true vocation, though, was photographing himself. After meeting his first lover and patron, Joachim Labriola, he gave up outside employment forever and devoted himself to the camera. "It became obvious that sexuality is something that you can make work for yourself, so I made it work for me," he says, shrugging.
